U.S. Urged to Act as China Surpasses in Biotech

An independent report from the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology has warned that China has taken the lead over the United States in critical areas of life sciences. The report, submitted to Congress and the White House, outlines how China’s sustained investment and strategic focus on biotechnology, enhanced by artificial intelligence, has positioned it ahead of the U.S. in a field essential to public health, food security, and national defense. The commission cautions that this advancement could allow China to use biotechnology against U.S. interests and signals a potential shift in global influence.

The bipartisan commission, made up of Legislators, Academics, and former Defense Officials, spent two years researching the issue and has proposed several actions to regain momentum. Key recommendations include creating a National Biotechnology Coordination Office within the White House and establishing a public investment fund for biotech startups aligned with national security. It also suggests restricting the use of certain Chinese suppliers in projects involving federal health and defense agencies. As congressional debate continues over implementing such measures, the report urges swift and comprehensive federal action, stating that the U.S. has limited time to act decisively and maintain competitiveness in this strategically vital sector.
