Abbott and Epic Collaborate to Streamline Glucose Data Access for Providers

Abbott has announced a new collaboration with Epic to integrate glucose data from its Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems into Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) systems in the U.S. This integration will allow healthcare providers to automatically access patient glucose data from LibreView accounts directly within Epic’s workflows, including during clinical visits. The initiative aims to enhance care by offering clinicians timely and convenient access to critical glucose readings without requiring separate logins or data transfers. The integration uses Epic’s Aura software, designed to connect health systems with medical device manufacturers and labs for more efficient care coordination.

Lisa Earnhardt, Executive Vice President and Group President of Medical Devices for Abbott, commented, "Our goal is to simplify care and drive better outcomes for both providers and patients. While the integration with Libre data is Abbott's first medical device offering with Epic, it's just the beginning. We aim to expand this model to our other medical devices and connected care platforms in the future." The initiative also supports better patient-provider collaboration, especially for people managing diabetes. Abbott plans to extend this integration approach to other medical devices in its portfolio.
