For all the planning that goes into a football game, it’s in the final moments before a play begins, in the huddle, when you learn if your team is fully in sync and ready to take on challenges together—win or lose.
For Scott Hutton, President and Chief Executive Officer of diagnostic testing and development services company Biodesix, his own version of a huddle has a similar aim. Hutton’s Huddle, which he serializes on LinkedIn, is an instructive, empowering series that helps employees stay focused on their team goals with a positive attitude and relentless abandon. Its goal is nothing less than pushing high achievers toward the top of their fields—a position Hutton knows all about.
A Purdue University graduate, Hutton worked at Medtronic for 16 years before leaving the company in 2017. Within a year, he was working at Biodesix as Chief Operating Officer and CEO-in-waiting, and in January 2020, he slid into the big chair. It’s an arc common to high achievers, and Hutton is helping others follow in his footsteps.
He recently started Series B of Hutton’s Huddle, focusing on what he calls “negative capability”—the skill, as a leader, to avoid overreacting to difficult situations and to remain forward-focused during trying times. “I recommend that you tune in, observe, and adapt,” he wrote.
With Hutton at the helm—tuned in, observing, and adapting—Biodesix has continued its strong growth, most recently unveiling new clinical and economic data for its Nodify Lung tests at the American Thoracic Society 2025 International Conference. As the company says on its website, “lung nodule management is a constant challenge—most nodules are benign, but missing cancer isn’t an option.”
And how do you make sure you don’t miss anything? It all comes back to Hutton’s principles. He says high achievers need to remember to take care of themselves, know and live their purposes, and stay focused on communication, collaboration, and cooperation. That’s what the huddle is all about. After that, it’s all about making strong plays on the field, and Biodesix is doing just that.
