Cleveland Clinic Introduces AI-Powered Documentation Technology

Cleveland Clinic, a nonprofit academic medical center, has announced that it is implementing Ambience Healthcare’s AI platform to enhance clinical documentation, improve documentation integrity, and assist with point-of-care coding. This technology reduces administrative tasks for healthcare providers, allowing them to dedicate more time to patient interactions. Beginning later this month, clinicians will have access to AI-powered software that records patient visits and generates detailed medical notes. These notes undergo provider review before being added to patients' medical records. Additionally, the system creates personalized after-visit summaries for patients and caregivers.

Cleveland Clinic tested the AI documentation solution in a pilot program throughout 2024, assessing its performance across more than 80 specialties. Clinicians reported increased face-to-face time with patients and improved coordination of care while experiencing reduced burnout. The AI does not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and providers must verify and edit generated notes before finalizing them. Patients will be informed about the tool’s use and may opt-out if desired. The technology will be introduced in phases to ambulatory providers across the U.S. in the coming months. As a multispecialty academic medical center, Cleveland Clinic combines clinical and hospital care with research and education.
